(2023) Documentary

A portal into the rise of San Francisco Chinatown’s political prominence and power – fueled by the fiery, fearless activist and kingmaker Rose Pak.
Since California’s Gold Rush days, the Chinese-American movement has had many movers and shakers—but few as perplexing, controversial, and successful as little known Rose Pak. Exploring how the once marginalized community of San Francisco’s Chinatown has evolved to now wield considerable political power, RALLY presents an unvarnished look at one of the most confounding and unapologetic figures ever to stand up for justice and fair representation. The film offers up a dynamic portrait of securing a confident voice at the table with significant, lasting implications for other under-represented communities – both within, and far beyond, the city.

Notes from the Grading suite.
My favorite thing about what I do is when I get the chance to play with media from all avenues; take the richness of all textures and materials, and dial them to work together is very rewarding. RALLY is a collection of the life not only of Rose Park, but it also encapsulates a small period of the life of the City of San Francisco, and it indulges allows us to feel the grit of time in the form of newscasts and interviews, periodicals, 16mm and super-8mm film, VHS, old photographical material... etc. A truly beautiful work by the filmmakers and research team.
